Patna: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI), posted at Sahebpur Kamal police station in Begusarai, was arrested by the Bihar Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) on Monday while allegedly accepting a Rs 29,000 bribe to remove a man’s name from a prohibition case.According to a press release issued by VIB on Monday, the arrested officer has been identified as Chandan Kumar Jha. A vigilance team caught him near the gate of the Sahebpur Kamal block office while allegedly accepting the bribe. The action followed a complaint by Amit Kumar, a resident of Sahebpur Kamal. The complainant alleged that the ASI had demanded money for removing his name from a prohibition case involving a car allegedly seized with liquor. The VIB said the case, registered on Oct 16 under Section 30(a) of the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, pertained to the seizure of the vehicle. The complainant claimed he had already sold the car to another person through a stamp-paper agreement and was therefore not connected to the offence. After receiving the complaint, the VIB carried out a verification exercise and found prima facie evidence of the alleged bribe demand. Subsequently, Vigilance Case No. 127/26 was registered on Oct 30.A trap team led by senior DSP Gautam Sharan Omi was constituted following a request from investigating officer and police inspector Vinod Kumar. The team subsequently caught Jha allegedly accepting Rs 29,000. The arrested ASI will be produced before Special Vigilance Court in Bhagalpur after interrogation. Further investigation is underway, the VIB statement said. With the latest action, the bureau has registered 116 trap cases in 2026 and arrested 116 govt officials and employees while allegedly accepting bribes.
