Patna: In a bid to improve learning outcomes and accountability in schools, the education department will appoint nodal officers for all 700 model schools in Bihar, introduce weekly tests, conduct surprise inspections and enforce a ban on teachers carrying cellphones into classrooms.The decision was taken at a virtual meeting chaired by education secretary RajivRoshan with district education officers and senior officials on Wednesday. He said instructions had been issued to all districts to appoint nodal officers who would “adopt” model schools and regularly monitor their functioning.“Officials will inspect model schools on Sept 30 to assess infrastructure, academic arrangements and coaching facilities for competitive examinations. District-level teams have also been formed for surprise inspections. During visits, officials will assess classroom teaching and students’ learning outcomes,” he said.According to Roshan, to track academic progress, the department will introduce weekly subject-wise tests every Tuesday. Questions will be written on classroom blackboards instead of being distributed as separate question papers. Four subject tests will be conducted every month, with teachers evaluating answer sheets and providing feedback. If Tuesday falls on a holiday, the test will be held on Wednesday.The department will also promote student leadership by introducing a class-monitor system, with school monitors to be elected from among class monitors. Teachers will be recognised through a ‘BestTeacheroftheMonth’ initiative.In addition, teachers have been directed not to carry cellphones into classrooms. Schools will also strengthen sports activities, particularly athletics events such as running, long jump and high jump, to promote physical fitness and identify sporting talent.
