12-year-old hacked to death in Madhepura, accused lynched

Patna/Madhepura: A 12-year-old boy was murdered by having his throat slit in Madhepura district on Saturday, following which villagers caught the suspected accused and beat him to death. The incident took place in Ward 2 of Itahri village under Ghailadh police outpost.The deceased, Sumit Kumar, son of Sunil Thakur, had gone out to buy snacks when he joined some children playing near the village, according to his family. The suspected accused, Anil Yadav, 45, a resident of neighbouring Barahi village, allegedly attacked Sumit with a sickle after the child tried to snatch the weapon from him. He first injured the boy’s hand before slitting his throat. Sumit died at the spot.Sumit’s grandfather, Phuleshwar Thakur, said, “Sumit had gone out to buy snacks. Then he met some children near the house and started playing with them. We thought he would return after playing. Never thought something like this would happen.”Villagers chased Yadav as he tried to flee. He allegedly attacked some people who attempted to intervene before being overpowered and beaten to death.Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and sent both bodies to Madhepura Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination.Madhepura sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Ajay Kumar said police received information about the murder at 10.30am on Saturday. “Those who took law into their hands are being identified and lawful action is being taken against them. At present, law and order situation in the area is normal,” he said.Following the incident, angry villagers blocked the Ghailadh-Singheshwar road and staged a protest. The SDPO and the block development officer reached the spot, and the blockade was subsequently cleared after officials pacified the protesters.Police personnel have been deployed in the village amid tension. The police are investigating the circumstances and motive behind the murder, the SDPO said.
